CATS costume

Description

This weekend marks the end of a long era of hard work and artistic exhaustion on my part. I had spent the last days in a blur of non-sleep and stress caused by over sewing.
All for the GLORY of Neko-con 8.

My closest friends all love the musical CATS, and love dressing like the cats. So as they do, they decided to dress as CATS for the con.

I sewed in all 9 costumes for the convention.
I sewed 7 unitards (23 hours of sewing), 1 dress, 1 pirate cat outfit with 4 layers of complex appliqué and hours of hard hand and machine sewing, as well as stressing over sizing and such. And I created the impressive Griddlebone costume from scratch with long-pile glitter tinsel fur, 4 way stretch primo velvet and 12 count; 7 foot feather boas imported from Australia. Finally I also painted 6 of the faces in our group. In all the count was several hundred hours of labor. I actually counted 46 hours work on griddle bone, and exactly 39 hours on Growltiger alone. Fortunately Grizabella had a pre-made unitard, with coloring done by :iconerikonil: and :iconfechten: however she still needed a dress, warmers, gloves, long coat with appliqué, and hair. The total hours for her were about 14.

I guesstimate I spent around 122 hours on these costumes, all the while stressed and physically exhausted. ( I also had made 3 Halloween costumes while making these separately)

Fortunately I didn’t do all of the work.

The leg warmers and arm warmers for 7 of the cats were elegantly crafted by the very talented :iconspidertrinity: . She started work on them MONTHS in advance.

The tails for 6 of the cats were made lovingly by :iconsaffity:

:iconerikonil: Painted the 6 painted unitards

And finally :iconfechten: masterfully made the 7 wigs. She had made the Misto and Jellylorum/Griddlebone wig years before. She also assisted with coloring, and fixing some sewing and sizing issues. She crafted Tugger’s jacket and collar/belt and provided many shoes. ^.^ she also is responsible for purchasing the fabric that I cut and sewed.
